StaFreez® Color Progression 

StaFreez® indicators are irreversible freeze-thaw indicators which monitor the condition of frozen (biomedical) materials during shipping and storage.  These indicators can protect these frozen resources if used as part of a routine quality assurance program.  They are designed to help eliminate costly repetition of tests due to decomposed reagents and also to reduce the amount of waste of frozen materials due to uncertainty about their temperature history.

StaFreez® indicators are designed to irreversibly indicate if your frozen materials have exceeded the manufacturers' temperature recommendations. 

These indicators are cost effective and easy to use.  They are activated at the time of their use by heating them to 40-50°C and immediately applying them to frozen material (-20°C or lower).  A bright blue "F" will appear, indicating that the material is frozen.  As the frozen material is warmed above -20°C, the color of the "F" will change gradually from bright blue to blue-gray, gray, and will become black as the frozen material reaches 0°C.  If the thawed material is re-frozen, the "F" will remain black, indicating that the material has thawed during its history.
